Amber of History: Reimagining the Library Cave at Dunhuang — A Recent Project by Xie Xiaoze
  • Exhibition Period 1 March - 5 May, 2025

  • Exhibition Venue Exhibition Hall 7, 4th Floor, Tsinghua University Art Museum

In early 2017, Xie Xiaoze was invited by the Dunhuang Foundation in the United States to become the first artist-in-residence for their new program. Xie consciously chose Cave 17 of the Mogao Caves, also known as the famous Library Cave, as the source of his inspiration, creating a series of paintings, sculptures, and multimedia art. Among them, the ink scroll Amber of History: Reimagining the Library Cave at Dunhuang drew from the style of Dunhuang scrolls, authentically recording a process of learning, imagining, and conceptualizing, and laying the blueprint for subsequent works. Works such as Eastern and Western Cosmologies explore the connection between the cave and cosmos, expressing the artist's reflections on the macrocosm. Beyond painting, Xie Xiaoze also created a large number of resin sculptures and multimedia installations. These works construct an abstract space of the Library Cave, while resonating with the ink scroll, offering a multi-faceted display of the artist’s innovative experimental spirit in his searching for cultural roots.
