The youthful spirit demonstrated by senior members of Tsinghua University’s Shanghai Alumni Association Art Troup during a recent musical performance broadcast on a CCTV channel has won widespread praise and admiration.

The Troup members, with an average age of 74.5 years old, performed a Chinese song about a vigorous spirit conquering time. Combining a powerful melody, rap, and lyrics, they sang about a soul tested but never worn down, drawing strength and optimism from adversity — calling on people to “never, never give up, like a fire".
Many were moved by the music video, not only because of the performance – the bright eyes of all the singers, their animated movements, the lively bounce in the conductor’s steps as he crossed the stage – but also because of the invigorating ambience and discernible buzz of zeal that reflected lives well-lived, spirits forever young, and the bond that connects the Tsinghua community.
The members of the Art Troupe enjoy time in a way that reflects the Tsinghua motto of Self-discipline and Social Commitment.
Cao Yuying, like many others in the Art Troupe, dedicated her life to the development of the country. However, her progress was not always smooth sailing. Born to a poor family, she got a job as a typist at the age of 14, yet never gave up on her dreams. Through her unrelenting efforts, she enrolled in a learning program and was admitted into Tsinghua.
What’s more, they have gained wisdom on the concept of time.
Liu Xila, the leader of the Art Troupe, knows that time and distance are but mere pebbles on the road to greater things. When studying at Tsinghua, Liu was the lead violinist in school and was accompanied by pianist Chen Chen, who later became his wife. After graduation, they moved to Sichuan to help with the provincial development.
Located in different cities, Liu and Chen were 71 kilometers apart, but would spend their rare holidays together. Even when storms disrupted the railways, Liu would carry his bike on his shoulder and walk through the sodden land to reach Chen.
In 2008, Liu Xila gathered his music-loving schoolmates and initiated the Art Troupe. “Why would you like to get together to sing?” Liu was asked.
Because there is a lasting love residing in us, the love for our country and our people. This love bestowed on us a precious lifetime and immeasurable happiness. We get together to share that happiness.
No matter what uncertainties time may unfold, we wish you youthful strength and resilience.
And never, never give up.
