Tsinghua University International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2020 to kick off in Beijing

December 18th–19th, 2020

Location: Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

Hosted by Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI International Governance (I-AIIG), with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the international supporting organization, the inaugural International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum will take place from December 18th–19th in Beijing.

The first event of its kind in China, this online/offline forum will provide a platform for global dialogue on the opportunities and challenges of AI cooperation and governance. The event will convene thought leaders and practitioners from around the world, including top officials from governments and interna-tional organizations, prominent academics and executives from the tech sector.

Prominent international speakers will include Fabrizio Hochschild, UN Under Secretary-General; Zhao Hou-lin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union; Kay Firth-Butterfield, Head of Artifi-cial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum; Adrian Weller, Programme Director for AI at The Alan Turing Institute; Yolanda Gil, former Chair of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence; Max Tegmark, MIT professor and Co-Founder of the Future of Life Institute etc.

Experts from Tsinghua who will speak at the Forum include Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Turing Award Winner and Dean of Tsinghua Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences; Zhang Bo, Director of Tsinghua Insti-tute for Artificial Intelligence; Fu Ying, former Vice Foreign Minister of China and Honorary Dean of I-AIIG; Zhang Yaqin, Dean of Tsinghua University’s AI Industry Research Institute; Xue Lan, Dean of I-AIIG etc.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, various AI technologies have been used for critical functions such as virus detection and diagnosis, contact tracing, facial recognition and recovery monitoring. However, the in-creased spotlight on these technologies has also raised broader concerns about the balance between ben-efits and potential risks, both economic and social.

With various AI principles being issued by governments, non-governmental organizations, academic asso-ciations and private companies, the balance between AI innovation and risk control has been the focus of much of a worldwide discussion.

This forum will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the benefits AI has brought and facilitate the conver-sation on an international AI governance framework to ensure that the development of AI serves to build a sustainable and inclusive future, rather than exacerbating challenges and creating new divides.
