Tsinghua student won the Young Investigator Award of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering

A postgraduate student of the School of Medicine of Tsinghua University recently received the Young Investigator Award at the 11th Asian-Pacific Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering, which was held from May 25-27 online.

Hu Chengquan won the award for his academic paper titled “A Novel OCT Image-guided Laser Automatic Ablation Method Based on Non-common Optical Path Structure”, which proposed a method that realized the combination of an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system and a high-power ablation laser based on a dual-axis Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) scanning mirror. The method can achieve accurate matching of OCT imaging regions with the ablation spots, providing a new solution for real-time and automatic tumor ablation with closed-loop image feedback.

The feasibility of this method has been verified by the set-up of this system and in vitro animal experiments. The method could achieve a precise and efficient combination of diagnosis and treatment in minimally invasive surgery through endoscopic design in the future.

The method proposed in this paper shows the development trend of the integration of minimally invasive surgery diagnosis and treatment, which is of great significance for the integration of diagnosis and treatment for minimally invasive surgery and the design of accurate and real-time automatic surgery systems.

Hu is a member of the research team of Liao Hongen, a professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, School of Medicine, at Tsinghua University. The team is committed to the research of high-performance naked eye autostereoscopic display for medical imaging and the integration of diagnosis and treatment in minimally invasive surgery. The team has made many achievements in related autostereoscopic medical imaging technique, which are closely integrated with the proposed "minimally invasive theranostics" for future medicine. Their research has been supported by national funds for scientific research and development.

The Asian-Pacific Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering is an important academic meeting in the field, held triennially and sponsored by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE).

This year’s session was in conjunction with the 59th Annual Conference of the Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (JSMBE), also held online to discuss exchange of the latest research and innovative progress in biomedical engineering.
