University Council Chairperson Chen Xu Meets Egyptian Ambassador to China Mohamed Elbadri


On the afternoon of December 19th 2019, Egyptian Ambassador to China Mohamed Abd El-Sattar Elbadri visited Tsinghua University. The Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council Chen Xu met with Ambassador Mohamed Elbadri to exchange views on the ongoing cooperation and opened up possibilities to stimulate deeper partnerships between Egyptian universities and Tsinghua.

Chen Xu welcomed Ambassador Mohamed Elbadri on his visit to Tsinghua and shared a brief overview of the institution’s historical progression and recent developments, noting that China and Egypt are two of the world’s oldest civilisations. Over the years, Tsinghua faculty and students have led several exchanges and field trips across Egypt, an expression of the rich appreciation towards Egyptian historical monuments and culture. Since the implementation of  the Global Strategy in 2016, Tsinghua has attached great importance to cultivating a higher education system of international stature. Chen Xu extended a warm invitation to the facilitation of more in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Egyptian universities, as well as a greater influx of Egyptian students to study at Tsinghua.

Ambassador Mohamed Elbadri further expressed an interest to establish closer academic links between Egyptian universities and Tsinghua. He noted that Tsinghua University is a stellar representation of the Chinese higher education system, and extended praises for Tsinghua’s achievements in areas of artificial intelligence and telecommunications. As education has been placed at the forefront of Egypt’s national interests, Ambassador Mohamed Elbadri illustrated the hopes and potential of furthering scientific research and mutual exchanges with Tsinghua. At the same time, he posited that Egyptian universities have a profound understanding and exemplary research endeavours in the political and economic developments of the Middle East, alongside historical and cultural education, and would like to provide support in encouraging greater talent development and knowledge sharing in these areas of expertise.

During the exchange, Chen Xu and Ambassador Mohamed Elbadri also explored collaborative prospects across delegation visits, deepening exchanges between faculty members and students, and the expansion of humanities education.
