The Department of Electrical Engineering held a joint celebration April 28th in the Main Building to honor the 100th anniversary of Mr. Zhang Mingtao as well as the 75th anniversary of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Ms. Jiang Juanchang, Mr. Zhang Mingtao’s wife, was a special guest at the celebration. Also in attendance for the event were Professor Chen Xi, Chairman of the University Council, Professor He Meiying, Chairman of the Education Foundation, Han Jingyang, Vice Chairman of the University Council, Guan Zhicheng, Vice Chairman of the University Council, as well as academicians and experts and Tsinghua teachers and students.

Chinese Vice Premier Huang Ju, who graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, extended his special wishes for Zhang Mingtao’s 100th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of the Department,--“Recall Mr. Zhang Mingtao; Inherit the Spirit of Tsinghua’s Department of Electrical Engineering.”
University Council Chairman Professor Chen Xi briefly reviewed Mr. Zhang’s contributions and achievements. “Mr. Zhang Mingtao spent his several decades career as a professor at Tsinghua. He dedicated himself to higher education and research in the electrical sciences. He made in his life time outstanding contributions to scientific research in China,” said Professor Chen Xi.
Born in 1907 and died in 1985, Zhang Mingtao is renowned as an expert in electrical engineering and as an outstanding educator in China. He joined the Tsinghua faculty in 1932. He later served for over 20 years as Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Founded in 1932, The Department of Electrical Engineering has cultivated more than 1,1000 graduates. On the base of electrical engineering, many new research directions have been exploited, such as computer technology, electronics, automation control, systems engineering, information science and biomedical engineering.
