During the six-day competition of 2006 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships held in Chaoyang Sports Park, Beijing, 27 Tsinghua students contributed to the volunteer service.
Six of the Tsinghua volunteers received one-week Backbone-Volunteer Training in the middle of July. The general training for all the volunteers came late July, lasting to August 7. Knowledge like first aid and emergency-fleeing were featured in the training.
Nineteen students were assigned to the department of Reception, and they were responsible for sports delegations from 15 different countries. Three female students worked as consultant volunteers in Kunlun Hotel and at information office in Beijing Capital International Airport. There were also three students served within two competition and warm-up areas. Wu Hao, who was in charge of the Tsinghua volunteer group, worked within the organization committee, together with government officials from Chaoyang District, Beijing. A student reporter is also included in this group.
The organization committee recruited around 1,000 college student volunteers for this international field and track competition. Among them, Tsinghua volunteer group is the only one totally composed of postgraduate students, with six Doctoral candidates and 20 Master students.
Though summer vacation is usually the busiest season in Tsinghua University, all the 27 students show their eagerness and passion toward volunteer service in international events. Most of them are also aspired to take part in the Olympic Volunteer Service.
