
Tsinghua University’s Department of Foreign Languages marked its 80th anniversary on April 23, with an event that honored its contributions to literature, translation studies, and foreign language teaching and research.
The foreign language program at Tsinghua was established in 1926, originally called the Western Literature Department. Throughout its history, the department has cultivated a number of noted scholars and writers, including Qian Zhongshu, Cao Yu, and Yin Ruocheng.
A celebration to mark the day was attended by Tsinghua President Gu Binglin, Senior Administrator Zhuang Lijun, and some alumni of the department, as well as guests from Peking University, Beijing University of Foreign Language Studies, and the Chinese Academy of Social Science.

President Gu made a speech, conveying his congratulations to the faculty of the department.
