A symposium on “Meeting the Education Needs of Minority Children: Challenge for Education Finance and Teacher Development” was held Feb. 24 at Tsinghua. The event was jointly sponsored by Tsinghua and the World Bank Institute.

Professor Hu Dongcheng, president of the Tsinghua’s School of Continuing Education, made an opening speech at the event, outlining the university’s Education Aiding the Poor Project and calling for continuing support from the World Bank.

Ms. Frannie Leautier, vice president of the World Bank Institute, gave an introduction of the World Bank’s work since 1981 to help Chinese children, especially those in remote areas, receive better education.

She emphasized that providing education services, financing education, and sharing knowledge are necessary for improving the education of minority children.

More than 20 officials and experts from the World Bank, the World Bank Institute, the Ministry of Education, and Beijing University attended the symposium. Over 600 people from nearly 20 of Tsinghua’s Education Aiding the Poor distance learning centers viewed the symposium live via video conference system.
