Professor Gu Binglin, president of Tsinghua University and member of Chinese Academy of Sciences was elected as a new member of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) at the 16th General Meeting of TWAS.
At the meeting, 50 scientists were officially inducted into TWAS, bringing the Academy's total membership to 813. Among the newly elected members, 11 scientists are from mainland China and 4 from Taiwan.
TWAS was founded in 1983. The objective of TWAS is to recognize, support and promote excellence in scientific research in the South, to encourage South-North cooperation between individuals and centers of scholarship and to encourage scientific research related to the Third World.
