A new model for strengthening collaborations between the University of California and Chinese universities known as the “10+10 Alliance”was the topic of discussion Oct. 11 between visiting Professor Robert C. Dynes, president of the University of California System, and several Tsinghua administrators and faculty.
Professor Dynes emphasized the importance of cooperation between universities in the U.S. and China, saying, “We share many things.”
Over the years, the University of California system, which currently encompasses 10 campuses, has enjoyed a wide range of historical interactions with Chinese institutions. The 10+10 Alliance, still in the development stage, will consist of the 10 UC campuses and 10 key partner universities in China.
Tsinghua President Gu Binglin met with Professor Dynes, and said the 10+10 Alliance is sure to promote the development of both the University of California System and Tsinghua.

Also attending the meeting was Professor Henry Yang, chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara and Professor Marye Anne Fox, chancellor of the University of California at San Diego.
Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe and several department chairs had a discussion with Professor Dynes on the potential collaboration based on the 10+10 Alliance, giving an outline of the current development, research and international cooperation of several disciplines in Tsinghua such as energy, information science and technology, and environmental engineering.
Professor Dynes later delivered a speech titled “The University of California: Research and Education in Service to Society.” Speaking in the main building, he introduced the history and current development of the University of California and stressed the importance of interactions between university and society. At the end of the speech, he noted that one of the most important criteria for being considered a world-class university is the impact it has on society.
Professor Dynes answered several questions from the students after the speech.
